Obama “Worse than Bush” on wiretaps, spying–EFF
With a scare headline like that, you know your post will get attention. So the EFF went ahead and is running a story about how the Obama team is now following a line of legal thinking that is ‘worse than Bush‘ when it comes to warrantless wiretaps. At issue is the ability to sue to the government for wiretaps, and the radical change Obama has taken over Bush.
..The DOJ claims that the U.S. Government is completely immune from litigation for illegal spying — that the Government can never be sued for surveillance that violates federal privacy statutes.
This is a radical assertion that is utterly unprecedented. No one — not the White House, not the Justice Department, not any member of Congress, and not the Bush Administration — has ever interpreted the law this way.
Right-wing bloggers will be all over this and the ‘new world order / fascist’ lens with which they already view every action of Obama (expect ammunition sales to increase). Left-wing blogs will have to start to reexamine if this is really the change they voted for.
