US military cyber-defenders prepare an offensive? Mutually assured destruction returns

That's the Chicago Way
The NY Times has a long piece about the efforts of the Pentagon not only to stop the hackers and foreign entities who are constantly probing our networks, but also our abilities to turn tables on them and go on the offensive. Included in such discussions and planning are throwbacks to the Nuclear age. Get ready for it–MAD has returned.
“The fortress model simply will not work for cyber,” said one senior military officer who has been deeply engaged in the debate for several years. “Someone will always get in.”
That thinking has led to a debate over whether lessons learned in the nuclear age — from the days of “mutually assured destruction” — apply to cyberwar.
Take down our banks we take down yours. Take out our electrical grid we take out yours. ’He come at you with a knife, you come at him with a gun…That’s the Chicago way’. Ok, got a bit carried away there but with a South Side Chicagoan in the White House maybe that’s what we will soon have in the way of ‘defense’.
Expect to hear more on this as the President’s Cyber Security report is due for release later today (Wednesday)
